Voting ends amidst poor turnout

Voting at today?s local government elections came to an end at 4.00 pm with officials and independent observers sayingthe turnout was poor in many areas where polling took place.

Except in the districts of Gampaha and Hambantota where a near 50 per cent turnout was reported in other areas it was around 35 to 40 per cent, they said.

They added that the polling was also marred by several incidents of violence, including one death. There were several cases on intra-party clashes aswell, they said.

The polling took place in all the districts, except Jaffna, for 234 local government councils. (LB)
