PHILIPSBURG-- Detective J.G. is under investigation after his return to St. Maarten from the United States was delayed by American authorities because he had attempted to travel back to St. Maarten with a plane ticket that had been purchased with a stolen credit card.
American authorities held J.G. for questioning temporarily. He was released later and allowed to purchase a new return ticket. Internal Affairs is investigating the detective's connection with the stolen credit card and a woman to whom he claimed he had paid cash for the return ticket that had been purchased with the stolen credit card.
Also under investigation is Inspector R.H., who allegedly ordered a detective to remove certain information, mainly the details of a vehicle used to carry out a robbery that matched the description of a car owned by an individual close to the inspector.
The Internal Affairs Department has not yet launched a full-fledged investigation, but is gathering information about a rumour that was circulating throughout the police station over the weekend.
This year marks R.H.'s 36th year as a policeman. He has had no prior suspensions, complaints, or any other marks against his conduct throughout his career.
Police Chief Commissioner Peter de Witte confirmed that J.G. indeed was under investigation by Internal Affairs and that the inconsistencies in the detective's situation called for a closer look into his connection with the credit card and the way in which his return ticket had been purchased.
As for R.H., De Witte said, "At the moment we are getting the facts together and a decision to launch a full-fledged investigation into the Inspector will be made after what is brought forth concerning the allegations. The Inspector has never had anything occur in his history as a policeman that puts his character into question."
R.H. said, "I am intently awaiting the information that will come forward. I have never and will never promote anything that is against the law."
