SUCKER GARDEN--The four occupants of a stolen vehicle suffered serious injuries after crashing head-on into an oncoming taxi during a high speed chase in Sucker Garden around 11:50pm Tuesday.

The stolen vehicle matched the description of "a small black car" believed to have been carrying fugitive Omar "Chucky" Nelson.

Both vehicles were severely damaged as a result of the tremendous impact and all four occupants of the suspect vehicle were taken to St. Maarten Medical Center to be treated for deep lacerations to their heads, faces and limbs.

The four occupants of the stolen vehicle, ages 16-19, are from The Keys area in Sucker Garden and there were arrest warrants out for at least two of them. The driver will be flown abroad in an effort to save his left eye and one passenger remained unconscious up to press time.

The driver of Taxi 83 did not suffer any serious injury.

A call received by Police Central Dispatch notified police that "Chucky" had been seen driving in a small black vehicle in Middle Region. A search was launched for the suspect vehicle at 11:35pm.

A patrol in Sucker Garden spotted a vehicle with licence plate P-5584 that matched the description given to police moments earlier. The patrol reportedly ordered the vehicle carrying the four teenagers to stop several times. However, the driver of the vehicle instead increased speed in the direction of Upper Prince's Quarter. To establish the identity of the persons in this car, police proceeded to chase it and a request for backup was communicated to Central Dispatch.

A press release from police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson stated, "During the chase the patrol noticed that the driver was driving extremely recklessly, causing oncoming traffic to pull to the right and off the road to avoid a collision."

Seeing how dangerous the situation had become, the patrol decided to slow down and stop the chase to prevent injury to innocent bystanders, and informed Central Dispatch that they were going to abort the chase.

Central Dispatch then radioed a patrol in Dutch Quarter to intercept the black compact car. Moments after the Dutch Quarter patrol received the order, the car in question collided with an oncoming taxi.

It was established during the investigation that the suspect vehicle had been stolen in the Philipsburg area earlier that evening. The Traffic and Forensic Departments are investigating.
