Gold chain snatching growing trend in town

SUCKER GARDEN--Taxi driver Terrence Baly was left stunned Sunday night when a youngster walked up to his vehicle and snatched his Gucci chain off his neck in what seems to be a new trend in the community.

Baly told The Daily Herald he had been in the vicinity of the adult entertainment clubs on Sucker Garden Road at the time.

He explained that while driving on Sucker Garden Road around 11:30 to11:45pm Sunday, he had seen an acquaintance and flagged him down. The two had been conversing and had noticed a group of youngsters gathered nearby.

Baly said that after the group had dispersed he had seen a youngster dressed in red Dickie pants and a black shirt with a hood approaching his vehicle. Before he realised what was happening, the youngster had snatched the chain and vanished.

Reports reaching this newspaper indicate that several other persons have had items of jewellery ? primarily gold chains ? snatched from around their necks in recent weeks. One such victim is an employee of this newspaper whose chain was snatched over the weekend.

Baly said the public ought to be made aware of what appears to be a new trend among youngsters.

A similar trend has been reported in a number of other Caribbean islands, including Jamaica and Barbados. In both of those countries, it is believed that this trend is being fuelled by the rising price of gold which has spawned lucrative "cash-for-gold" businesses.

In the case of Barbados, that country's Attorney General Adriel Brathwaite contended in a statement on Crime last week Wednesday, August 3, that the cash-for-gold trade was contributing to the state of robberies in that country and said, "Legislative intervention will be required to address this trade."
