Women's rights activists want more protection for women

Women?s rights activists have called for more protection for women in the wake of increased violence against them.
In order to ensure the protection of women from the increasing cases of violence against them, law enforcement agencies, civic organisations and local communities have to work together and find solutions, they said.
Women are restricted to homes and policed, apart from being subjected to violence, the activists told a media conference on Wednesday.
In areas such as Trincomalee, women cannot be seen on the streets after 4 pm. Students in the affected districts taking the ?A? level exams are afraid to go to schools, said Sherine Xavier from Home for Human Rights (HHR).
Families stay together during nights and men are not able to go to work as they stay on guard through the nights, according to reports from women?s organisations.
?If women are insecure and they are prey to people who want to inflict violence on them, it is also an indictment on the community and society at large,? said Women and Media Collective Director Sepali Kottegoda emphasising the need to tackle the issue of violence against women.
Vani Simon from Affected Women?s Forum in Akkaraipattu said these attackers usually come from behind and grab the women, placing one hand on the chest and the other on the throat, and flee the spot as soon as they hear the neighbours come to her rescue.
