COLE BAY--The closing of one lane of Welfare Road resulted in traffic chaos on Wednesday, angering motorists who sat nearly stationary in traffic for two hours or more and prompting government to re-evaluate the detour system that was in place.
Realising that an untenable situation had been created, the Ministry of VROMI and the contractor drew up a new plan that will go into effect at the end of the day today. The plan will turn Union Road and Orange Grove Road into two-lane one-way roads.
Union Road will be one-way from the Kruythoff roundabout to the Tackling gas station at the junction of Union Road and Orange Grove Road. This means that vehicles coming from the Simpson Bay/airport area will not be able to use Orange Grove Road, but will have to take the one lane of Welfare Road that is open to go to their destination.
In addition, as Union Road will be one-way, motorists coming down from Alexis Arnell Road (the Cake House road) will not be able to turn left onto Union Road. Motorists coming from the French side or the Port de Plaisance direction will have to turn right onto Orange Grove Road.
Department of New Works head Kurt Ruan said the traffic situation on Wednesday had been caused by bottlenecks created in the area of the Tackling gas station; hence the new plan. He said the contractor would have to make new directional signs before the new plan could be put into effect at the end of Thursday, with the cooperation of the control unit.
Ruan also said the option of opening the Cay Bay pass that connects to the Cay Hill roundabout was being considered, but no decision on this had been made, as landowners would have to give their approval.
The situation became ugly in spots on the road, with people stepping out of vehicles, throwing their hands in the air and expressing their disgust. Motorists also reacted with flung hands when they had to endure the chaos while several ministers with police escort sped through the traffic.
