ST. PETERS--Miki Bar and Restaurant in St. Peters was robbed by two masked men Monday around 9:30pm. A man T.M. was injured when he physically fought the armed robbers.
As it was a slow night for the restaurant, the manager Z.M. began preparing to close around 9:00pm. "Right now, because all the Chinese [businesses] are having trouble ... only me is the last one [to be robbed]. All the rest had problems. ... That's why I closed early," said Z.M.
She said she usually strolled outside the building on slow nights, but she had been showing a new employee how to stock the drinks cooler for the next day. The two were almost done with their task when two masked men entered the restaurant.
Z.M. said one of the men had come around the bar, pushed her into a corner and struck her on the head. The man commanded her to empty the cash register while the other man went into the back kitchen area.
"I say, 'Look, please don't hit the people. Take out [all the money],' ... [because] I don't want the people have problems. Money come, money gone. ... I told him, 'Please don't hit the people. You feel you need money, take money [and be] gone,'" said Z.M.
T.M., who was having dinner, threw a bottle at the attacker in an attempt to stop him from hurting Z.M. more. Enraged, the man began fighting T.M.
The robbers raided the cash register and drawers, and made off with about US $200. However, on their way out one of the robbers fell and dropped his gun, which slid under a table and was left behind.
When the police were called, the police operator told Z.M. that a patrol was already on the way, as someone outside the restaurant also had reported the robbery. Officers arrived around 9:50pm to investigate.
T.M. was sent to St. Maarten Medical Center for his injuries to be treated. The other employee was shaken but physically unharmed.
The gun was confiscated for further investigation. The Special Robbery Unit is handling this case.
