Ranil and Karu to contest for UNP leadership

Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya will contest for the UNP leadership at the party elections which are due to be held tomorrow afternoon, party sources said.

Mr. Sajith Premadasa and Ravi Karunanayake are due to contest for the Deputy leader's post.

At the vote 94 members of the Working Committee and the Parliamentary group will be entitled to vote. Of them eight are MPs who are not members of the Working Committee.

The party is going for elections as they have not been able to reach consensus in appointing a leader without an election.
