PHILIPSBURG--Under the theme "Thank you, Lord, for watching over us as we go forward" the seventh annual National Day of Prayer was held in front of the Government Administration Building on Sunday.
Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams asked in her address that all those in attendance and local believers should stand in the gap and pray for all things ill on St. Maarten and for the nation's future. She said no matter the size of the group coming together or the length of the prayer, what was most important was the weight of the heart that was lifted. She closed by giving glory and thanks to God for the year past and the year to come.
In her sermonette, Prophetess Aster Allen asked government where its strategy for national identity was based. She advised that in spite of intimidation or challenge, to go forward the nation's trust must be in God.
To those in the community she said God had placed gifts within each person. All persons living in St. Maarten are at the right place, at the right time, with the right resources. Now, with the right attitude we must pray that God will lead us to fulfil our national destiny, she said.
The ecumenical service began with praise and worship led by Love and Grace Ministry. Young members of Church of God Trio lifted hearts to worship with an "a cappella" singing presentation. The Bible Baptist Youth Choir, Piper Laudry, and the Combined Roman Catholic Reward Choir, among others, also gave musical presentations.
Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth Affairs Rhoda Arrindell gave the vote of thanks.
Pastor Jerome Thomas gave intercessory prayers for thanksgiving, guidance for the government and economic stability. A second session of intercessory prayers was led by Pastor Emanuel Carbon who prayed on crime, violence, family unity and for the island's youth.
The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the second Sunday of January. It was decreed in 2005 by an Executive Council resolution of the then-Island Territory of St. Maarten, and became part of the annual cultural calendar of programmes and activities of St. Maarten.
