UPFA Mayors or Chairmen to councils where the party was successful at the last week’s elections will be filled on merit and not on the basis they obtained the highest number of preferential votes, a senior cabinet minister said today.
Minister Susil Premajayantha told a news conference that the UPFA has appointed a seven member committee headed by former Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake to select the members to be appointed to the top position in the respective councils.
“Getting the highest number of votes will not an automatic choice for the top position”, he said.
The names are to be gazetted next week and the swearing in by April 1.
