Death toll rises to seven

The death toll in the ongoing deluge rose to seven yesterday night prompting the authorities put out alerts of flooding and land slides in several parts of the country.

The bulk of the deaths were reported from the Kegalle District where five persons were buried alive under mud owing to landslides, officials with the Disaster management Centre (DMC) said today.

One person was struck down by lightning and a second person was reportedly drowned in separate incidents earlier this week in the Kalutara district, they said.

Meanwhile the main Hatton-Nuwara Eliya Road has been cut-off since early today owing to a landslide at Diyagala in the Ginigathena area, the officials said.

Work is currently underway to clear the road they added.
