Dutch police want to work in St. Maarten

THE HAGUE--Working for St. Maarten's Police Force is more popular than ever in the Netherlands. Some 500 police officers registered for the four information sessions in Dordrecht yesterday, Tuesday and today, Wednesday.

The Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad (AD) reported on Tuesday that because of the immense interest, it had been decided to stick to a maximum of 500 applicants. Dutch police authorities had anticipated that some 50 people would apply for the 20 job openings in St. Maarten. An "overwhelming result," stated policeman Klaas Groen on his blog. Groen is already working in St. Maarten.

There are 15 vacancies for regular police work and five openings for detectives. St. Maarten has been recruiting abroad because it needs to increase its Police Force from the current 189 officers to 389, by 2017. The majority of these new officers will be recruited locally.

Management of the South-Holland-South Police Force will do the pre-selection, after which a selection team from St. Maarten will make the final selection. At St. Maarten's request, the Dutch Government will financially assist the placement of Dutch police officers for a maximum of three years.

The officers will fill the short-term, critical vacancies. According to the job opening on the Internet, the 15 basic police officers will be working especially in the districts. The five detectives will be working at the Judicial Division. General working experience is required of the applicants, as well as experience with working in a multi-cultural society.

It is unclear why there is a run on working at the St. Maarten Police Force, but the fact that police forces in the Netherlands are being reduced may be a contributing factor. Several media outlets in the Netherlands including Elsevier magazine and Radio Netherlands mentioned the news. Several prospective applicants have indicated their enthusiasm to work in St. Maarten, on a police community Website in the Netherlands.
