Book Week officially opens with parade

page8d158PHILIPSBURG--Philipsburg Jubilee Library's Children's Book Week kicked off Sunday afternoon with a mini-parade led by Generation New Status drum band on the library grounds and some book-reading and ribbon-cutting by Education Minister Rhoda Arrindell, supported by Member of Parliament Romain Laville.

In her address to those gathered, Arrindell encouraged reading and suggested reading books on Caribbean history, to which local youngsters can relate more. She read from one of her favourite children's books before cutting the ribbon to declare Book Week officially open.

There also was entertainment provided by Motiance Dance School and Shabba Djembre drum group. Pupils of nine participating schools also took part in a read-a-thon.

Book Week continues throughout the week with a theatrical performance daily from 9:00am to 12:00 noon by the group Jepobon of Bonaire. The group will perform the English version of its play "Rek e buriko rek' e! ? Ezeltje strekje tafeltje dekje-aka" (a donkey tale). The play will be enjoyed by 12 schools that have registered to see the performances.

Activities continue on Tuesday with a free birding PowerPoint presentation by Environment Protection in the Caribbean (EPIC) with volunteer Ronald Pieters.

Local children's book authors will visit the library on Wednesday and will read from their books between 3:00 and 4:30pm. The prize-giving ceremony for the six schools that participated in the Display Competition will take place at 3:00pm.

A movie night has been organised at the library for Thursday between 6:00 and 7:45pm.

Veterinarian Dr. DeWitt of Animal Hospital of St. Maarten will give a presentation on pets on Friday between 3:00 and 4:30pm.

Youngsters are invited to sign up for an animal watch on Saturday organised by the Nature Foundation. Those who do not participate in the animal watch are invited to the library for a special story time between 11:00am and 12:30pm.

Youngsters can sign up to explore the island's coast in an island hike on Sunday to be led by professional hikers.
