REDjet gets go-ahead to service St. Maarten

PHILIPSBURG--REDjet Chief Executive Ian Burns says St. Maarten and four other Caribbean islands have given permission for the low-cost carrier to operate flights from their countries.
Burns made the announcement at a news conference held at Crowne Plaza in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad, last week to launch the partnership between the airline and shipping company Laparkan Trinidad Ltd.
Laparkan now will be responsible for the sale and distribution of REDjet tickets to travel agencies in Antigua, Grenada, St. Kitts, St. Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and St. Maarten which has been added to the four countries in which REDjet currently has permission to operate: Barbados, Guyana, Trinidad and Jamaica.
Burns said that through Laparkan travel agents now would be able to bundle REDjet fares into holiday packages with hotels and other services. He said REDjet already had instigated a rapid change in terms of prices for consumers, despite a few early hiccups.
He said he had been informed that traffic on the Guyana route had increased by 83 per cent. In addition to the expanded routes, REDjet also will be purchasing another aircraft in March 2012.
No details about the service to St. Maarten were released. Officials in St. Maarten could not be reached for comment over the weekend.
