The Government has earned over Rs180 million since the Southern Highway opened on November 27 by way of toll rates, Parliament was told today.
More than 650,000 vehicles have used the highway since then at an average of 7,000 vehicles per day, Deputy Minister of Housing Lasantha Alagiyawanna said.
He said that� the expressway has enabled people to travel the� 95 kilometer stretch of road between Kottawa and Galle within 55 minutes� and enabled motorists to save on two third of the fuel they would usually� use� if they used Galle Road to� travel from Colombo to Galle.
The Minister made this remarks during the debate on new regulations for users of expressways in the country.
