Burglars have become pests, says Prosecutor

PHILIPSBURG--The lack of detectives has resulted in burglary investigations receiving less attention, due to the rise in the number of homicides in St. Maarten, Chief Prosecutor Hans Mos said Tuesday.

Mos also explained on Tuesday that the current state of overcrowding at the Pointe Blanche prison has hit home hard and has sparked a free-for-all for burglars, as the thieves are aware that they are likely to be released after 26 days.

"The burglars have indeed become pests and they themselves know that if they get caught, they are going to be released after 26 days most of the time. This is a major problem that has to be taken care of," he told The Daily Herald. "We probably have one-sixth of the detectives of Curaao and the recent homicides have been assigned a large effort from our end that has forced us to focus primarily on [more serious] crimes."

Meanwhile, police spokesman Inspector Ricardo Henson said that in spite of the current difficulties, members of the Police Force continued to execute their duties with pride.

"As one can imagine, the frustration is there. When you work hard to catch someone and they are released soon after, it does make an officer a little tense. Regardless, our morale is not put into question.

"We are here to serve and protect and if that criminal is off the street for 26 days, or even one day, it makes St. Maarten that much safer. We fulfil our duties with pride and to the best of our ability, and that is all we can do," Henson told this newspaper.
