COLE BAY--New fisheries regulations are in effect for the territorial waters of St. Maarten based on the Visserijbesluit (PB 1991, nr. 74). This regulation outlines the specific sizes of fish pots allowed and the prohibition of drift/gill nets (without a permit) and trawled drag/bottom nets.
The practice of spear-fishing with Hawaiian slings does not require a licence.
Nature Foundation St. Maarten in consultation with the Maritime Authority Fishing Desk (Dienst Scheepvaart) announced the regulation changes on Thursday.
According to the regulations, all fish pots will have a mesh size of no less than 1.5 inches/38mm and must have an escape panel of at least 6 inches by 6 inches/15cm by 15cm. The escape panel must be of biodegradable material or fastened by biodegradable twine. The panel or twine has to decompose after being submerged for 20 days.

It is further prohibited to capture or kill turtles and marine mammals.
