WIPM sweeps elections with four seats in Island Council

Zagers highest vote-getter

SABA--The Windward Islands People?s Movement (WIPM) stays at the helm of the Saba government after sweeping four of the five Island Council seats in Wednesday?s election that saw incumbent Commissioner and party number three candidate Bruce Zagers emerge as the highest vote getter with 257 votes.

The only other party in the race, Saba Labour Party (SLP), will occupy the fifth seat with leader Ishmael Levenstone set to replace his cousin Akilah Levenstone in the council.

WIPM won 684 of the 821 valid votes cast, while rival SLP received 137 votes. There were eight blank votes. Total voter turnout was 87 per cent, as the total number of eligible voters was 955.

This was Saba?s first Island Council election since it became a Dutch public entity on October 10, 2010. It was also an election with several new voting regulations that included longer polling hours and the return of voting via proxy.

The results for WIPM mean that all of its six candidates will serve in government either as Island Council members or commissioners. Based on WIPM policy, it is expected that Zagers and fellow incumbent Commissioner and second highest vote-getter Chris Johnson (176 votes) will return as commissioners, while Carl Buncamper (92 votes), Rolando Wilson (77), Eviton Heyliger (63) and Shamara Linzey-Nicholson (19) will serve in the Island Council.

Levenstone of SLP secured with 85 votes. Fellow candidates Janet Wilson-Hassell and Ernesto Roland ?Cuchie? Klaber received 34 votes and 18 votes respectively.
