United National Party MP Lakshman Kiriella has voiced his disapproval over the government's decision to make military training mandatory for freshersentering local universities.
The minister exerted that the government should receive prior consent from students and provide a detailed outline of the programme to their parents before any such plan could be initiated.
"There is no provision in the law under which university students can be given a military training," Mr. Kiriella told a news conference.
The government is scheduled to implement the proposed 'Leadership Training' programme in universities throughout the island beginning this Monday.
