Dengue claims 172 lives this year, 75 from Colombo district

Dengue fever has claimed 172 lives this year and 26,130 suspected cases were reported, Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry�stated.��

Colombo district records the highest with 75 deaths and about 10,000 cases. December saw 2354 dengue cases compared to 779 cases in 2010.

With the onset of the North-east monsoon and scattered rains in many parts of the country, the unit advices public to seek immediate medical attention if fever persists for three days.
