SUCKER GARDEN--The parents of R.L. (20), a young man arrested by police on Arch Road in Sucker Garden on Wednesday, are complaining of police brutality.
They came to the offices of The Daily Herald with video footage taken of the incident in support of a written, eyewitness account.
Officers are clearly seen punching the man several times in the head. One officer was also seen to be using a leather sap-type club measuring about a foot long, of a type not believed to be issued to police officers. The video does not cover the entire incident from the start, but commences at a point when the suspect is on the ground being held and restrained.
An eyewitness stated that she had seen the officers stop a grey Kia motor vehicle. The police searched and then arrested a man and a woman who were in the car. An officer is alleged to have trodden R.L.'s foot during this time.
R.L. said to the officer something to the effect that he had trodden on his foot, at which point the officer started to push him in the chest. R.L. asked why the officer was pushing him and the officer pushed him again. R.L. put up his hands and pushed the officer back.
At that point several police officers jumped on R.L. and began to beat him about the head and body. One officer hit him with handcuffs across the back of the head, while another took out a short baton and hit him across the face several times. R.L. fell to the ground and one officer restrained him in a choke hold, while another, who sustained a twisted knee during the incident, punched him in the head at least four times.
The witness was shocked by what she had seen of the incident and stated, "Man, this was an extreme play of force that was not called for."
Inspector Ricardo Henson attended the scene and told this newspaper's reporter, "The man became very aggressive and it is not yet completely known why he did so. The officers tried to calm him. However, eventually they formed the decision to arrest him.
"The altercation that took place was severe upon the officer, as the man resisted arrest fiercely. The police officer has some damage to his knee. It is not yet known what the damage is; however, we all wish him a speedy recovery. A man is in custody and he will be processed in due course."
