PHILIPSBURG--Vessels used for transport, recreation and amusement of visitors were inspected on Great Bay Beach this week.
The inspection, in which the Dutch Caribbean Coast Guard was involved, was a joint operation conducted in close cooperation with the police, Immigration Department and Economic Affairs Ministry Shipping Inspectorate and Maritime Affairs Inspection Unit.
The inspection was carried out at the peak of business on the beach in order to cover as many craft as possible that operate in the area. The focus was on the validity of registration cards, licences for crew, certificates of seaworthiness, other vessel documents and presence of obligatory lifesaving and fire-fighting equipment for safety of crew and passengers.
According to a Coast Guard statement, the combined operation aimed to ensure safe and secure transportation for all visitors to St. Maarten.
More inspections will be carried out until all vessels are compliant with shipping regulations.
The Coast Guard will continue to monitor all vessels and operations during routine patrols to ensure continued compliance.
The Coast Guard is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week for maritime safety and law enforcement issues. It can be reached by calling 913 toll-free.
