Postal workers continue strike as issues remain unresolved

PHILIPSBURG--Postal workers in St. Maarten remained on strike for a second day on Friday as they held firm to their position that they will not return to work until they receive clarity on the future of the postal services in St. Maarten and on their own legal status.

The workers held their protest action outside the Post Office in Philipsburg with full support of their union St. Maarten Communications Union (SMCU).

Reports last night indicated that government and Nieuwe Post Nederlandse Antillen (NPNA) NV were still in talks geared towards reaching an agreement.

NPNA General Managing Director Franklin Sluis said during the Radio Soualiga news broadcast on 99.9FM on Friday that a draft agreement had been tabled and NPNA was awaiting government's word on the draft.

He said the intention would be that postal services, staff and assets would be transferred to St. Maarten once an agreement had been reached. On the issue of the assets, he said parties would have to discuss what assets and under what terms and conditions these would be transferred.

He said the concerns of workers were understandable and noted that efforts were being made to give the employees "some comfort level that everything will be okay."

The Daily Herald learnt last night that St. Maarten was not in agreement with aspects of the draft agreement.

SMCU President Ludson Evers said the workers would maintain their action until this issue was settled and workers were clear on their position. "The action continues on Monday if this issue is not resolved," he said.
