Banks put on alert for possible heist

PHILIPSBURG--The Daily Herald has learned that all banks in St. Maarten have been put on high alert by Interpol for a possible bank heist.

The alert reportedly was issued by Interpol more than a week ago. It came on the heels of a Coast Guard action against one or two go-fast boats in the area that reportedly were to be used in a heist.

In an invited comment on Tuesday night, Prosecutor Hans Mos confirmed that the banks had been put on alert, but declined any further comment. As a result of the alert, all banks have adapted security measures and increased security at their branches. Secondary entrances at certain banks are also closed for periods of the day and/or manned with extra security.

The possible culprits are said to have armoured vehicles as targets as money movements from banks are taking place. It could not be ascertained when such an alert would be lifted or whether the banks have reported any suspicious activity to law enforcement.
