PHILIPSBURG--The second shooting within 24 hours occurred early Friday morning. This time the victim was attacked in her Gladiola Road home in Mary's Fancy.
According to reports, the woman's brother was first confronted in the home by a gun-toting assailant at 3:40am. The brother ran to his bedroom to retrieve a weapon to defend himself when he heard a gunshot. He rushed to his sister's room and found her shot. The assailant was seen fleeing the scene.
The police patrols reportedly learnt on their way to the scene that the victim had already been transported by private vehicle to St. Maarten Medical Center (SMMC) for treatment.
One of the investigators spoke to the victim's brother L.M. at the hospital. He related what had happened. His sister N.V.M. was shot in the upper right arm. Hospital sources said the gunshot wound was quite serious and the woman had to be admitted for observation and further treatment.
The Special Robbery Unit, Detective Department and Forensic Department are investigating the case to determine the motive and who is responsible for the shooting.
Friday morning's shooting was the second such incident in less than 24 hours. The other occurred in Cole Bay on Thursday afternoon when a man F.B. was shot in the leg. The victim was taken to SMMC for treatment, but his injuries were not considered to be serious.
