Voter apathy in public sector

Some 125, 000 plus public servants have shunned their right to vote at the upcoming March 17th Local Government Elections indicating an apparent voter apathy in this sector, statistics gathered by an independent polls monitor revealed today.

In the last Parliamentary Elections that was held in 2010, 415 432 postal applications was accepted, but this time around only 321 595 persons hade registered, Rohana Hettiarachchi with the People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections (PAFFREL) said.

He added that these figures included the areas where voting at 66 local bodies had been postponed.

An estimated 9813 375 persons are eligible to vote at the forthcoming elections to be held for 235 local government bodies. (LB)
