China has offered to provide the Sri Lanka Navy with professional training, and conduct of joint exercises and surveillance operations, a senior official said.

He said the offer was made to the Navy Commander Vice Admiral Somathilake Dissanayake by a high-powered Chinese defence delegation that visited the Naval Headquarters in Colombo.

The delegation was headed by Major general Qian Lihua from the Chinese Defence Ministry.

During the meeting the Chinese delegation was impressed with the professionalism displayed by the Sri Lanka navy in its counter maritime terrorism operations and asymmetric warfare.
