MARIGOT--Candidate Daniel Gibbs, who finished second to Alain Richardson in Sunday's first round of the Territorial Council election with a separation of just 182 votes, Monday defiantly claimed a first victory in leading St. Martin out of an economic and social crisis, which he said had been "created by the UP and an indulgent opposition group RRR."
"We owed it to ourselves to immobilise the UP party and thanks to the St. Martiners' will we have succeeded in doing that in the first round," declared Gibbs in a release Monday.
He continued: "We have also succeeded in putting an end to the economic takeover by former director of Semsamar who has perverted the economy of St. Martin for a long time. He had agents from RRR working for him, but our team succeeded in preventing his list St. Martin Pour Tous from reaching the second round and informing the population of their hidden agenda."
Gibbs said his team's analysis of Sunday's results confirmed Alain Richardson's RRR finished in the lead "partly due to financial support supposed to have been attributed to social housing."
"In the second round we cannot let the influence of national parties, as in the case of Victorin Lurel party's support of RRR and MAP, decide for St. Martiners."
He added: "Our team's principal project is that of St. Martin. Without a complete overhaul of St. Martin, waterfront projects, commercial port, or free zone, it will not see the day. Unity, liberty, and prosperity for all St. Martiners; that's what we propose."
