PHILIPSBURG--All plenary sessions of Parliament, the Central Committee and permanent committee meetings, except in-camera sessions, will be broadcast live on Pearl Radio 98.1FM as of today, Monday, in addition to the regular airing on St. Maarten Cable TV Channel 20.
President of Parliament Gracita Arrindell announced on Sunday that a structural arrangement had been made with the radio station to have the meetings broadcast live, as was done in the past with Island Council meetings.
Meetings of parliament were broadcast by Radio Soualiga 99.9FM in the past, as a public service by the station's now retired managing director/veteran broadcaster Eddie Williams.
The non-broadcast of meetings on radio was a pet peeve of Member of Parliament Louie Laveist, who raised this point in several meetings of Parliament, tagging it to the limiting of the people's right to know and to be informed.
The first session to be part of the radio and television simulcast is this afternoon's plenary session of Parliament about utilities company GEBE and public infrastructure.
Deputy Prime Minister and Infrastructure Minister Theo Heyliger has been called to Parliament to deal with those two matters, based on a request from opposition National Alliance (NA). The presence of Tourism, Economic Affairs, Telecommunications and Transportation Minister Franklin Meyers also was requested.
The meeting will focus on infrastructure developments and the environmental impact, and developments at GEBE, including the fuel clause and the generation and distribution of electricity and water.
The meeting at Parliament House starts at 2:00pm and is open to the public.
