Bakeries raise prices, no word yet from govt

PHILIPSBURG--Carl and Son's Bakery Managing Director Carl Housen made good on his public statements and increased the price of bread as per January 1. Housen was not alone in this action, as bakeries and supermarkets that produce their own bread reportedly also have increased their prices.

Government has yet to address these increases and has not responded to inquiries by this newspaper.

It has been exactly one year since Carl and Son's requested that government allow the increase. Government has not contacted Housen to date, other than statements about the request being at "Legal Affairs."

Two prices now will be offered for bread at Carl and Son's: a wholesale price and a retail price (what the consumer pays). White sliced bread will increase from NAf. 2 retail to NAf. 2.50 per loaf, with a NAf. 2.25 price per loaf for wholesale. Sliced wheat bread will increase from NAf. 2.50 retail to NAf. 3.25, with NAf. 2.70 for wholesale. Lard bread and butter bread will increase from NAf. 1.80 to NAf. 2.25 retail, with a NAf. 2 price for wholesale. French bread will now cost NAf. 2.70 retail and NAf. 2.23 wholesale.
