PHILIPSBURG--The Windward Islands Teachers Union (WITU) is seeking answers on when teachers and civil servants will be paid the Christmas bonus for which NAf. 300,000 would be available, according to Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-William.
Elshot told reporters at the Windward Islands Chamber of Labour Union (WICLU) weekly press briefing on Thursday that several workers had approached the union saying that their December pay packets did not reflect a bonus. She said the workers were wondering who had been paid the bonus, if anyone, and when it would be paid. She said there had been years in the past when Christmas bonuses were paid in February and if this would be the case, government should say so. "Basically clarity is needed," Elshot said.
Prime Minister Sarah Wescot-Williams announced in December that government was looking into giving civil servants a "small" Christmas bonus. Traditionally persons up to a certain salary scale within government are usually paid a small Christmas bonus, but government was looking at whether it would be done the same way again in 2011. She did not specify at the time when exactly the bonus would be paid.
