Four bridge openings for the summertime

SIMPSON BAY--There will be four openings of the Simpson Bay bridge per day as of May 16 for maritime traffic to enter and leave Simpson Bay Lagoon, due to the decrease in yacht/boat traffic in the hurricane/summer months.

The resumption date for the six bridge openings per day will be determined by Simpson Bay Lagoon Authority Corporation in collaboration with the maritime sector when the high season approaches.

Bridge openings at 9:30am and 11:30am will be for outbound and inbound maritime traffic as of May 16. Only outbound maritime traffic will be allowed for the 4:30pm opening and only inbound traffic will be allowed for the 5:30pm opening.

All vessels are reminded by maritime officials to call "Bridge Attendant" on VHF Channel 12 before transiting, stating their name and intention to enter or depart.

Smaller vessels entering the lagoon may call in for an exact opening time, and enter the channel and stand by to reduce transit time.

Jet skis should use the North part of the channel in the area where the bridge does not swing. Rowboats and kayaks should not enter the channel when the bridge is in operation.

Special bridge openings in case of inclement weather during the hurricane season will be communicated via e-mail, marine VHF Radio Channel 12, local radio stations and, if there is enough time, the local/regional newspapers.

Bridge attendants will be near their stations if such is required, to answer any radio requests.
