No arrest yet in killing of James

page4a275Gendarmerie questioning witnesses

MARIGOT--Gendarmes questioned about seven persons Friday in connection with the fatal shooting of Gerald James (18) in French Quarter on Thursday night, but no arrests had been made up to press time Friday night.

The Gendarmerie reacted rapidly to the shooting of the Milton Peters College student from Middle Region who was gunned down at a house in St. Georges, French Quarter, around 8:30pm Thursday.

Gendarmerie Commandant Stphane Brunet said the investigation was progressing and witness statements had been collected from a number of persons.

James' mother told The Daily Herald her son had been "in the wrong place at the wrong time." She said her son had gone with three other friends to visit a friend in St. Georges for a farewell get-together, as the friend was leaving the island the following day ? yesterday, Friday.

She said that, according to her son's friends, the group had been hanging out and while the owner of the house was out to buy some bread a call came in to one of the young men in the group demanding that he come outside the house.

As this young man was manoeuvring his moped outside the house with Gerald right behind him, the shooter came to the door. While he was pushing in the door the person he intended to shoot was pushed out of the way and the bullet instead was directed towards Gerald. According to Gerald's mother, he was shot in the stomach.

His mother said the family was not taking the loss of her son lightly, especially as he had been preparing to leave the island in August to further his studies in the Netherlands to qualify as a mechanic. He had been in his last year at Milton Peters College TKL. Gerald would have been 19 on August 30.

Commandant Brunet declined to speculate whether the shooting had been a case of mistaken identity and whether the motive had been revenge. "It's too early to say. Right now we are gathering information," he said.

Repeated attempts to reach Prosecutor Jacques Louvier for additional information were unsuccessful Friday.
