Joaquim Richards found dead in pond

GRONINGEN--Police uncovered the lifeless body of 24-year-old Joaquim Richards, son of St. Maarten's former Lt. Governor Franklyn Richards, from a pond in Groningen, the Netherlands Friday afternoon.

A walker passed by the pond in the Noorderplantsoen Park on the Noorderbuitensingel and saw something in the water. He did not trust the situation and alerted police who found Joaquim's body around 1:30pm.

The area around the pond was closed off for a while. Divers of the Fire Department took the body out of the water and took it to a local morgue. It is not clear how Joaquim ended up in the water. Police have started an investigation.

Joaquim had left his home in Groningen around October 25. Nothing was heard from him since. Police and family were very concerned about Joaquim and issued a missing person report on the police website, both in Groningen and throughout the Netherlands.

National and local media also reported that Joaquim was missing. He was placed on teletext, in newspapers and various websites, including the websites of the two largest organisations for Antilleans and Arubans in the Netherlands OCaN and MAAPP.

St. Maarten students helped Joaquim's father in the search for his son. Posters were hung throughout Groningen and in other cities in the Netherlands. Joaquim, a former VWO student of Milton Peters College came to the Netherlands in 2006 to further his studies.

His mom, former First Lady Angela Richards-Huggins, reportedly left St. Maarten Friday afternoon to join her husband and daughter Keshia in Holland, apparently before the tragic news about Joaquim's death was received in St. Maarten.
