Motion to appoint a PSC to deal with national issue moved in Parliament

The motion to set up a Select Committee of Parliament aimed at resolving the country’s national issue was moved in Parliament today.

The Select committee will specifically recommend and report on political and constitutional measures to empower the people of Sri Lanka to live as one nation.

It is entrusted with the task of recommending to Parliament within six months appropriate political and constitutional measures to ensure that all people will preserve and promote their respective identities and live with dignity and security as one nation, enhance the unity among them and empower the people and the country to promote socio, economic, political and cultural development.

The motion states that the Select Committee has been necessitated as Members of Parliament being elected representatives of the people are best equipped to determine the nature and scope of steps to be taken to enable such changes.

The motion has been signed� by� 13 ruling party members� including Maithripala Sirisena,� Vasudeva Nanayakkara,� DEW Gunasekara,� (Prof) Tissa Vitarana,� Basil Rajapaksa,� Arumugan Thondaman,� Patali Champika Ranawaka,� P. Piyasena, Douglas Devananda ,� A. H. M. Azwer and� Rajiva Wijesinha, Anura Priyadharshana Yapa,� Rauf Hakeem and� T. B. Ekanayake.

Members to the committee will be named by the Speaker which will consist of 31 members who will be drawn form all political parties represented�� in the House.

The Select Committee of Parliament is empowered to determine its quorum; summon any such persons and documents as it deems necessary; obtain the services of specialists and experts in relevant fields to assist the Committee and submit interim reports from time to time
