Two MPs want speedy handling of short-term contract proposal

PHILIPSBURG--National Alliance (NA) Member of Parliament (MP) Louie Laveist and Democratic Party (DP) MP Roy Marlin have called on the advisory councils in St. Maarten for speedy handling of advices on the draft amendment to the civil code to stem the abuse of short-term labour contracts, so the initiative law can be handled in Parliament.

NA had submitted the draft law to Parliament several months ago. It is currently at the Advisory Council.

Laveist said during Thursday's Parliament meeting on the dismissal of more than 100 Simpson Bay Resort and Marina workers that the handling of the draft should be high priority. He said it was time for MPs to stop giving lip service to the people and make a contribution. He said NA had a contribution to make via the draft amendment to the civil code. The party, he said, is open to suggestions on the draft to close the loopholes that exist and to "avoid this mass abuse of the short-term contract."

Laveist said Parliament should request that the relevant advisory councils handle the law with haste so that it can be presented to Parliament for handling once it has been reviewed by all the relevant bodies. Laveist said if amendments had to be made to the draft law, this should be done, as MPs should live up to what they had sworn to uphold.

Roy Marlin said that while the initiative law did not necessarily cover all the needs of the working class, it was "a step in the right direction." He urged Parliament's President Gracita Arrindell to bring the draft to the floor of Parliament and said, "It will have my support."

"This is not about the UP [United People's] party or the DP. It is about securing the rights of workers. It's a step in the right direction. It doesn't matter who presented it," he said.

NA leader MP William Marlin said his parliamentary group would be "answering concerns" about the draft raised by the Advisory Council.

In the draft initiative law, NA proposes that short-term labour contracts should not be given to workers holding positions of a permanent nature.
