Application submitted for new Choice hotel

PHILIPSBURG--Jose Salvador Icaza, director of Emerging Markets and Caribbean Franchise Development for Choice Hotels, confirmed on Tuesday that an application from "an interested party from the Dutch side" has been submitted for the possible construction of a new hotel to fall under the Choice franchise umbrella.

In an invited comment, Icaza said he was not at liberty to divulge any additional information. "They have submitted an application. We have reviewed the market, possible sites and the feasibility of the project and are awaiting some more paperwork from them," Icaza said, adding that Choice Hotels "do want to be in St. Maarten very much."

He said a Choice Hotel was definitely viable in certain locations of the island and would complement the other 10 Caribbean properties already under the Choice umbrella. Two new properties in Dominica and Anguilla are near completion.

Independent Member of Parliament Frans Richardson recently said government should look to boutique hotels as the future of hotel development on the island. He believes 10 boutique hotels, which are smaller properties of about 50 rooms or less, spread throughout Dutch St. Maarten would put St. Maarten on the right path of "standing out" in the region.

Choice Hotels International is one of the largest and most successful lodging companies in the world. It currently franchises more than 6,000 hotels representing more than 490,000 rooms in the United States and more than 35 countries and territories.

Ranging from limited service to full service hotels in the economy, mid-scale and upscale segments, Choice-branded properties provide business and leisure travellers with a range of high-quality, high-value lodging options throughout the United States and internationally.

Its Ascend Collection is a network of historic, boutique and unique hotels that offer guests an authentic local experience. To become member of Ascend Collection, a hotel must embody one of three distinct categories ? historic, boutique or unique ? and show a commitment to service excellence. The Ascend Collection programme was developed specifically for people who appreciate an upscale hotel with a strong local flair.
