Increased number of accident victims on New Year day

An increased number of victims of accidents and violence were admitted to the Colombo National Hospital or have sought OPD treatment on the New Year’s eve and New year day, officials said.

More than 550 persons sought OPD treatment or were admitted, according to hospital statistics.

�This was an increase compared to the previous years.

At least 400 people were treated at the OPD and more than 150 were admitted at the hospital.

Police stepped up its night patrols on New Year’s eve and thereafter on the southern Expressway and charged more than 450 drivers for various violations including speeding.� Five accidents were reported until 12 noon today from last night.
